20 questions, official test format
Practice questions in the style of the Australian citizenship test, based on the official study booklet Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond.
Timed — 45 minutes, like the real test
The clock starts when you begin and submits automatically at zero, exactly as on test day.
Score and explanations at the end
Answer all 20 questions, then see your score and a plain explanation for every one.
Passing score: two conditions
You need 15 out of 20 correct (75%) and all 5 Australian values questions correct, with 45 minutes on the clock — the same bar as the official test. Miss one values question and you do not pass, whatever your score.
This is a free practice tool and does not replace the official test. Always confirm current requirements on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before your test.
Why take this free Australian citizenship test?
Our free citizenship test lets you practise 20 questions in the style of the official test, based on the material in the official study booklet, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond. The question format and 45-minute timer mirror test day, so the right answers come naturally when it counts.
It also rehearses the part that catches people out. The real test has two pass conditions, not one: the 75% mark and every Australian values question correct. This test applies the same rule, so a high score with one values question wrong shows up as a fail — exactly as it would on the day (and if the day itself goes badly, here is what happens if you fail). Take it as many times as you like, read the explanation for every question, and come back until you pass with room to spare.
How the free test works
- Start the test directly on this page. No account, no card.
- Answer all 20 questions within the 45-minute limit — the clock auto-submits at zero, just like the real test.
- See your score and a detailed explanation for every question, with the values questions marked.
- Spot weak sections, review, then retake the test until you pass comfortably (15 out of 20 or better, values questions clean).

Practice test, mock test or quiz — what's the difference?
People search for all three, and for the citizenship test they mean the same thing: a set of questions in the exam format that you can mark yourself against the real pass rules. What separates a useful one from a time-waster is whether it keeps the real shape — 20 multiple-choice questions, the 45-minute clock, and the two-condition pass rule — and whether it explains the answers you get wrong.
The test on this page is built to be all three at once: use it untimed as a quiz while you are still reading the booklet, and as a strict timed mock when your appointment is getting close.
Who needs to take the Australian citizenship test?
Home Affairs' own wording: Most applicants between 18 and 59 years of age will need to take the Australian citizenship test
(learn about the citizenship test). The sitting itself happens on a computer, in English, at an appointment the department arranges. For applicants aged 60 and up the rules read differently — see the citizenship test at 60 and over.
Use it as a timed mock exam
In the final week before your appointment, change how you use this page: one sitting, no pauses, no booklet open, and let the clock run. A mock only predicts the real day if you sit it under real conditions. Two habits matter most — never leave a question blank (an unanswered question scores the same as a wrong one), and check the values questions before you relax about your score, because they decide the result on their own.
Treat 15 out of 20 as the floor, not the goal: if your mocks hover at the pass mark, one unlucky question on the day sits between you and a pass. Aim to clear it with margin.
What the questions cover: the 5 sections of Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond
Every real question comes from the testable parts of the official booklet plus its glossary. Two things are certain about the mix: the real test always includes its 5 Australian values questions, and Home Affairs publishes no per-section distribution for the rest — so our 20-question mix is modelled on the booklet's section weighting, not on a claimed copy of the real spread.
Australia and its People
The story questions: First Peoples, how the colonies became a nation, the flags, the anthem, the national days. Easy to underestimate — the detail is in dates and symbols.
Democratic Beliefs, Rights and Liberties
What Australians are free to do and what citizens owe in return. The wording overlaps heavily with the values material, so precision here pays twice.
Government and the Law
The densest reading: parliaments, the Constitution, courts, voting, who does what across three levels of government. Expect the most look-alike answer options here.
Australian Values
The section with its own pass rule — the real test always carries its values questions, and every one must be right. Freedom, respect, equality, and the rule of law.
Key Terms (Glossary)
The booklet's glossary — terms like electorate, referendum and jury service. Questions often turn on the exact definition rather than general understanding.

Frequently asked questions
Is this Australian citizenship test really free?
Yes. The full 20-question test on this page is free, with no account, no card and no limit on retakes.
Do I need to create an account?
No. You can start the test immediately on this page. An account is only needed if you want the full practice library, flashcards, mistake review and progress tracking.
Is the free test timed?
Yes. You get 45 minutes for 20 questions, the same as the official test, and it submits automatically when the clock reaches zero.
How many questions do I need to pass?
Two conditions, the same as the real test: at least 15 of 20 correct (75%) AND all 5 Australian values questions correct. Miss one values question and you do not pass, whatever your score.
Does this match the official test format?
The structure matches: 20 multiple-choice questions, 45 minutes, 5 Australian values questions and the same pass rule. The questions themselves are original practice questions based on the official study booklet, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond — the Department of Home Affairs never publishes its actual test questions.
What is the difference between a practice test, a mock test and a quiz?
For the citizenship test, nothing that matters — they are different names for the same tool: exam-format questions you mark against the real pass rules. This page's test works as all three; the serious version is sitting it timed, in one go, close to your appointment.
Does Home Affairs have its own practice test?
Yes — the department offers an official citizenship practice test on its website and describes it as a sample test only, with different questions on the real day. Use both: the official sample to see the department's style, this one for unlimited timed repetition with an explanation on every question.
